A Day in the Life: BC Children’s Hospital Library

After my first meeting with the HLABC, I contacted the librarian at BC Children's Hospital and was invited to see what a day in the life was like!

Here I am at the BC Children's Hospital Library. We had the opportunity to browse the computers, shelves, and back rooms to see how items were being catalogued, what items were solely for storage, and how volunteers helped keep the library running. At the time, they had a scavenger hunt going for patients. A woodland theme was designed just outside of the library.

I enjoyed the open, central space with colourful couches and mats, as anyone could grab a book and sit down to read. My classmate and I spent some time doing exactly that.

Near the back of the library was the offices where items that were not yet catalogued or flagged for re-cataloguing were stored. Some items not pictured were also educational tools for patients, such as a doll used to teach human anatomy and menstruation.

We were very grateful to have the opportunity to visit a hospital library. We would like to thank Pam Harrison for her time and willingness to show us around. [Visit conducted pre-COVID in Winter 2019]
