Artificial Intelligence & Data-driven Technologies for Children

Does what you study affect your awareness of the effects of data-driven technologies?

For my Graduate Research Assistance, I took on a project with Dr. Eric Meyers at the UBC iSchool tackling student awareness of the effects of data-driven technologies. In this study, we sought to understand if a student's area of study might influence their decisions and opinions.

The study was divided into two parts: an initial survey and a subsequent focus group. Students who completed the survey were given a choice to opt-in or opt-out of the focus group.

PART I: The Survey

Here is a link to the survey sent out to students as well as the poster used to advertise the survey:

The aim of the survey was to collect initial data on students' perspectives on the effects of data-drive technologies on children, while considering their subject area of study.

The Mock Focus Group

At the end of the survey, participants are given the option to opt-in to an interdisciplinary focus group.

In a mock-study, four students from various disciplines (Fine Arts, Computer Graphics, and Computer Science) were brought together to discuss their opinions on the same studies presented in the survey. The group's results were compared to their initial individual survey responses.

The mock study allowed me to revise the script and study presentation for the focus groups that are to be facilitated in early Spring 2022.
